Gardening & Sustainability
G Road’s Gardening and Sustainability program teaches young people, ages 6-12, the importance of growing food and reducing waste. It’s a hands-on experience that allows kids to get outside and learn healthy habits while getting the support they need to be successful at school. In addition, participants are growing fruits and vegetables that are included in food boxes provided to community members in need. Being able to support a neighborhood food box program is a privilege that allows our participants to collaborate with other organizations and experience a collective impact.
Program Coordinator Brittany Nixon has a Master’s in Sustainable Solutions from ASU’s School of Sustainability, as well as over 10 years of experience volunteering and working with children and young adults in supervisory and advisory roles. G Road has developed a curriculum that allows young kids to grasp the concepts of sustainability while having fun getting their hands dirty.
Our work is made possible through collaborations with the Arizona Worm Farm, Seventh Day Adventist Community Center, Shamus O’Learys, and the Gabel Boys and Girls Club. In order to make this program sustainable and to offer a more educational experience, we need your support. Please join our monthly donor team and help us grow this program. We look forward to participating in farmers markets, going on more field trips, and creating a consistent culture of healthy habits.
We currently have two gardens in the target area we serve and have a waiting list to be a part of the program. We are looking to expand the opportunity to participate by starting another garden, which will accommodate more young people. The area we serve is classified as a “food desert” and healthy food is not readily available or accessible, but we are looking to change that, one seed at a time.
